## In brief

In May 2025, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/oes/special-requests/oesm25nat.zip) counted **20,430** US physicists, with median pay of **$172,250** a year. Of the BLS counts since 2021, the highest was **21,340**, in May 2024, close to the May 2025 count. The earliest figure here is [an estimate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physicist) of **400** from 1900, not measured the same way as today's count. The last full technology era for physicists: Deep learning, GPU acceleration, and ML-augmented data pipelines, 2015 to 2022. ML competence became a differentiating skill for physics job applicants from approximately 2017 onward.
