# Special Effects Artists and Animators

US SOC code 27-1014. Markdown version of https://futurehistory.earth/timeline/27-1014

Also called: Animator, VFX artist, Visual effects artist, Motion designer, Motion graphics designer.

## In brief

In May 2025, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/oes/special-requests/oesm25nat.zip) counted **19,970** US special effects artists and animators, with median pay of **$102,030** a year. Of the BLS counts since 2021, the highest was **35,990**, in May 2022. The earliest figure here is [an estimate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_animators%27_strike) of **1,200** from 1941, not measured the same way as today's count. The last full technology era for special effects artists and animators: Real-time rendering for virtual production, 2018 to 2023. Virtual production created a new category of on-set VFX artists who needed to be physically present on production, commanding premium rates for their real-time pipeline skills.
