# Emergency Medicine Physicians

US SOC code 29-1214. Markdown version of https://futurehistory.earth/timeline/29-1214

Also called: ER doctor, Emergency room doctor, EM physician, ED physician, Emergency physician.

## In brief

In May 2025, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/oes/special-requests/oesm25nat.zip) counted **32,880** US emergency medicine physicians, with median pay of **$335,550** a year. Of the BLS counts since 2021, the highest was **36,180**, in May 2021. The earliest figure here is [an estimate](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12085066/) of **27,000** from 1999, not measured the same way as today's count. The last full technology era for emergency medicine physicians: AI imaging triage, FDA-cleared diagnostic algorithms, 2015 to 2022. AI imaging triage tools reduced time-to-treatment for stroke and large vessel occlusion without reducing physician headcount.
