# Chefs and Head Cooks

US SOC code 35-1011. Markdown version of https://futurehistory.earth/timeline/35-1011

Also called: Chef, Head cook, Executive chef, Chef de cuisine, Sous chef.

## In brief

In May 2025, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/oes/special-requests/oesm25nat.zip) counted **200,040** US chefs and head cooks, with median pay of **$62,470** a year. Of the BLS counts since 2021, the May 2025 count is the highest. The earliest figure here is [an estimate](https://usa.ipums.org/usa/volii/9050occup.shtml) of **50,000** from 1900, not measured the same way as today's count. The last full technology era for chefs and head cooks: Miso Robotics Flippy + Spyce robotic kitchen, 2017 to 2024. Robot kitchen deployments as of 2026 remain confined to the commodity prep tier: repetitive single-task cooking (frying, chopping, portioning) in high-volume fast-food contexts.
