# Stockers and Order Fillers

US SOC code 53-7065. Markdown version of https://futurehistory.earth/timeline/53-7065

Also called: Stocker, Order filler, Retail stock associate, Stock clerk, Warehouse picker.

## In brief

In May 2025, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/oes/special-requests/oesm25nat.zip) counted **2,833,810** US stockers and order fillers, with median pay of **$37,330** a year. Of the BLS counts since 2021, the highest was **2,872,680**, in May 2023, close to the May 2025 count. The earliest figure here is [an estimate](https://usa.ipums.org/usa/volii/9050occup.shtml) of **80,000** from 1890, not measured the same way as today's count. The last full technology era for stockers and order fillers: Amazon Kiva acquisition + Walmart Bossa Nova pilot, 2012 to 2020. The Walmart Bossa Nova termination in retail is the canonical counter-example to automatic displacement: human workers proved more flexible in ambiguous physical environments.
