  • Macromedia Dreamweaver + Flash (WYSIWYG and rich-media era)

  • Web standards movement: CSS layouts, Firefox, Ajax (standards-based design era)

    The web standards movement, championed by the Web Standards Project and designers including Jeffrey Zeldman, pushed the industry away from table-based layouts and toward semantic HTML combined with CSS for presentation. Firefox 1.0, released in November 2004, was the first browser in years to seriously challenge Internet Explorer's market share and it did so by implementing web standards more faithfully. Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), popularized by Gmail (2004) and Google Maps (2005), showed that web applications could feel as responsive as desktop software. This era is where "web design" and "web application design" began to diverge: static marketing sites versus dynamic, data-driven interfaces that needed a different set of skills. The W3C's HTML5 and CSS3 drafts, circulated from 2008 onward, were the foundations for everything that came next.

  • Responsive design + mobile-first + Sketch (smartphone era)

    Ethan Marcotte coined "responsive web design" in May 2010 in an article in A List Apart, describing the combination of fluid grids, flexible images, and CSS3 media queries that could adapt a single design to any screen size. The timing was not coincidental: Apple had released the first iPhone in June 2007 and the iPad in April 2010. Designing for the desktop and then fitting it onto a phone was quickly revealed as the wrong approach; by 2013-2014 "mobile-first" was the professional consensus.
