  • Moral treatment and asylum architecture (pre-pharmacological era)

    The first tool of the nineteenth-century asylum physician was the institution itself. Moral treatment, imported from Pinel in France and Tuke in England, held that a structured, humane, therapeutically-designed environment could restore mental health.
