In 1948, Richard and Maurice McDonald closed their San Bernardino drive-in restaurant, fired their carhops, eliminated most of the menu, and reopened with their Speedee Service System -- an assembly-line approach to burger production modeled on the Ford factory floor. Each worker performed a single, specific task: one worker on the grill, one on the bun-toasting station, one on the assembly line for condiments and packaging, one at the counter window. Waiting time dropped from 30 minutes to 30 seconds. Ray Kroc franchised the system from 1955 onward, opening his first franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15, 1955. By 1960 there were over 100 McDonald's franchises. The Speedee Service System redefined the counter worker's job from a general food-service role into a station-specific, machine-paced, repeatably trainable position. It was the industrial revolution applied to food service.

BLS data shows Food Preparation and Serving Supervisors earn significantly more than crew members, and the NRA 2025 data notes that 77% of operators are struggling to retain experienced workers -- which means internal promotion is a realistic path for any crew member who demonstrates operational reliability and system knowledge.
