The ticket was a simple piece of paper sold at the box office indicating the section of the house (pit, gallery, box). There was no numbered seating in most venues before the 1870s; the usher's skill was spatial management of a crowd filling an unnumbered space. The transition to numbered seating in the late 19th century added a new skill: reading a ticket and matching it to a specific seat number rather than simply directing the crowd to a section.

The Lumiere Brothers showed their first projected film in Paris on December 28, 1895; within a year film shows were a commercial attraction in US storefronts and vaudeville houses. The nickelodeon era (1905-1915) created a new format: small converted storefronts charging five cents for admission, sometimes with a simple turnstile and a cash box at the door rather than printed tickets. The "usher" in a nickelodeon was often the owner, a family member, or a single hired doorperson who collected the nickel, handed the patron inside, and managed the line out front. The role was informal and unstandardized; there was no uniform, no flashlight, and often no seating chart because many nickelodeons had only bench seating with continuous projection.

The movie palace era formalized the usher's toolkit. By the late 1910s, theater chains had standardized front-of-house operations: ushers wore uniforms, carried electric flashlights, held a seating chart for the house, and were trained in the precise etiquette of showing a patron to their seat without blocking the view of seated guests. The Roxy Theatre (1927) took this to an extreme, hiring a retired military officer to drill its corps of tuxedo-clad ushers and instilling military-style hand signals for inter-usher communication. The flashlight became the defining object of the theater usher's work: it lit the aisle without disrupting the film, it was a symbol of the usher's authority to direct movement in a dark space, and it appears in nearly every historical photograph and illustration of the role from 1920 to 1960.

The multiplex transformed the usher's role more dramatically than any technology since the flashlight. In a single-screen movie palace with 2,000 numbered seats and continuous showings, an usher's job was essential: the house refilled multiple times per day, and each patron needed guidance to a specific seat in a dark room. In a 12-screen multiplex with open seating and self-serve popcorn, the seating-guidance function largely disappeared. Multiplexes still employed ticket takers at the corridor entrance and lobby staff for cleaning and concession work, but the formal, uniformed usher who led patrons down the aisle by flashlight became a nostalgic artifact. By the 1980s, most cinema chains had eliminated uniform-and-flashlight ushers entirely in favor of a generalist "theater associate" who took tickets, swept theaters between shows, and served at the concession stand.
