    Before 1850, childcare in the United States was almost entirely unpaid household labor performed by mothers, grandmothers, older siblings, and in wealthier households, nursemaids drawn from the domestic servant pool. The nursemaid was not a childcare specialist — she was a domestic servant whose assigned tasks included child-minding alongside laundry, cleaning, and other household labor. No tools specific to childcare existed: swaddling cloth, handmade cradles, cornmeal-and-milk pap for infants whose mothers could not breastfeed, and the nursemaid's own body as instrument of comfort and transport. The 1800 Census did not enumerate childcare workers as a category because the work was invisible — it happened inside households, performed by women and girls who were classified as dependents or domestic servants, not as workers.

    The opening of the Nursery for the Children of Poor Women on St. Mark's Place in New York City in 1854 introduced the first institutionalized childcare arrangement in the United States — a room with matrons and assistants providing basic care (feeding, bathing, supervision) for the children of working mothers. By 1892 there were 90 such nurseries nationally; by 1912, 500.
