  • Nitrocellulose lacquer nail polish (Revlon, 1930s) and the licensed beauty salon era

    The introduction of nitrocellulose-based nail lacquer (which produced a hard, glossy finish far superior to the oil-and-tinted-powder enamels of the 19th century) in the late 1920s and its mass popularization by Revlon through the 1930s and 1940s transformed the manicure from a nail-conditioning service into a color-fashion service.   • Acrylic nail extensions (liquid-and-powder system, from dentistry)

    In 1957, dentist Frederick Slack accidentally broke a fingernail and improvised a replacement using dental acrylic material, giving rise to the artificial nail extension industry. Commercial acrylic nail techniques entered US beauty schools in the early 1970s through practitioners like Phyllis Monier in Chicago, who taught small classes in the new liquid-and-powder application. Stuart Nordstrom developed the professional liquid-and-powder system still used today in the late 1970s. In 1975, actress and humanitarian Tippi Hedren arranged for her personal manicurist, Dusty Coots, to teach nail care techniques to 20 Vietnamese refugee women at a resettlement camp in Northern California.
