    The first cabin attendants worked propeller aircraft with unpressurized or low-altitude cabins, noisy and prone to airsickness. Their toolkit was a nurse's training, a manual safety briefing, a first-aid kit, and the physical labor of hauling baggage, securing wicker seats, and serving cold food. The role was almost entirely embodied: calming nervous passengers, watching for medical distress, and managing a small cabin by hand. No automation touched the work; the technology was the airplane itself and the human capacity to make it feel survivable.

    The jet age, opened by the Boeing 707 in 1958, transformed the cabin: larger pressurized aircraft, longer routes, and far more passengers per flight. Galleys with ovens, standardized rolling service carts, and choreographed meal-and-beverage service turned the job into a logistics operation conducted at altitude.
