Plate glass windows and gaslighting (first era of purpose-built display)
The arrival of affordable plate glass in US retail from the 1850s and 1860s created the physical precondition for the window trimmer's existence. Before plate glass, shop fronts had small, multi-paned windows that could not accommodate a dressed scene; goods were simply stacked near the entrance. Plate glass enabled a full theatrical window: a three-dimensional tableau visible from the street. Gaslighting and, from the 1880s, electric lighting allowed windows to remain lit after dark, making the evening passerby as much a target as the daytime shopper. The first window trimmers worked entirely by hand using props, fabrics, paper, paint, and whatever merchandise was assigned, with no specialized equipment beyond scissors, wire, and imagination.

L. Frank Baum's 1900 manual codified the craft of window trimming just as two new tools arrived to transform it: life-like wax mannequins and motorized mechanical devices. The wax mannequin, which appeared in the final decade of the 19th century with glass eyes and human hair set strand by strand, let the window trimmer narrate clothing in use rather than folded on a shelf. Motorized devices borrowed from theatrical stagecraft gave windows motion, which Baum advocated enthusiastically as the surest way to stop a pedestrian. First, the term "visual merchandising" was coined (the phrase had existed since the 1940s but gained wide adoption in the 1970s as ambitious display professionals sought executive-level recognition). Second, planogram systems emerged: paper-based, then software-assisted, schematic diagrams specifying exactly where each product should be placed on each shelf or fixture. Planograms standardized display execution across large multi-store chains and shifted some of the creative judgment from the individual display worker to the corporate visual merchandising director. For floor-level workers, this meant more precise direction from above and less autonomous creative latitude, but also more consistent brand presentation at scale. The 1970s and 1980s saw visual merchandising directors gain VP-level status at department stores, reflecting the profession's full integration into retail strategy.

Simultaneously, the rise of e-commerce after 1995 began a slow contraction of mid-tier department stores (the primary employer of visual merchandising teams), pushing the profession toward specialty retail and luxury formats that could justify the labor cost of skilled display work. Store count at chains like Gap, Limited, and Banana Republic peaked and plateaued; the visual merchandising workforce grew modestly but was increasingly concentrated in premium-tier formats.
