Isaac Pitman published his shorthand system in 1837, and US adoption followed over the next two decades. By the time Underwood had sold an estimated 5 million units between 1900 and 1930, the typewriter had transformed the private secretary from an educated man of affairs to a trained woman skilled in shorthand and typing -- and had created the typing pool, a new organizational form that would define the 20th-century office.

Wang Laboratories introduced the Wang Word Processing System (WPS) in 1975 -- the first practical, affordable dedicated word processing machine for business. The device replaced the linear typewriting process (type it right the first time, or start over) with edit-and-revise: text could be stored on magnetic cassette, corrected on screen, and reprinted cleanly. By 1977, Lanier had 20% of the dedicated word processor market; by 1980, IBM had entered with the Displaywriter, which sold 200,000 units in its first two years. For the executive secretary, the word processor was both a gift and a threat: it made revision far faster, reducing the mental labor of perfect-first-draft typing, but IBM explicitly positioned the Displaywriter as a machine to replace the "secretarial pool" -- an automation of the highest-volume typing work that was beginning to reduce headcount in large corporate typing departments.

The IBM Personal Computer was introduced in August 1981 -- initially dismissed by corporate secretaries as an experimental curiosity. Within three years, the PC running WordPerfect or Lotus 1-2-3 was the dominant productivity device in the American office. IBM's own PROFS (Professional Office System), launched in 1981 for mainframe users, introduced networked email and shared calendars to over one million IBM employees by the late 1980s. The PC era had two simultaneous effects on executive secretaries. On the disruption side: executives began typing their own correspondence for the first time, and the typing pool -- the most labor-intensive tier of the secretarial hierarchy -- began to shrink as one person with a PC could produce the output of several typists. The net employment effect was a gradual compression of the general secretary headcount while the executive tier held more stable.

Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail were early corporate email systems, but it was Exchange Server (1996) and Microsoft Outlook 97 that standardized email as the executive's communication layer. Before corporate email, incoming correspondence flowed through the secretary's desk: she opened the mail, triaged it, prepared responses for signature, and managed the paper files. Email rewired this workflow: for the first time, executives received messages directly in their own inboxes, read them personally, and often replied without secretary involvement. The BlackBerry, launched commercially in 1999, extended this into the executive's pocket. The effect on executive secretary employment was significant: the correspondence handling and transcription functions -- the original rationale for the private secretary role -- shrank from a full-time activity to an occasional one. What survived was the scheduling, gatekeeping, travel coordination, and relationship management work that email and the BlackBerry did not automate.
