For the first two and a half centuries of the American clerk's existence, the job was entirely manual: hand-copying documents, maintaining bound ledgers, drafting court orders in longhand, and organizing paper records in deed books and filing systems. Literacy was itself the core skill -- in many colonial communities the clerk was the only professionally literate person. The quality of the official record depended entirely on the clerk's penmanship, legal knowledge, and personal attention. Errors were expensive to correct and difficult to trace. The permanent record was not a backup; it was the only copy.

The Sholes and Glidden typewriter entered commercial production in 1874 through the Remington Arms Company. By 1900, typewritten docket entries and court orders were standard in most American courts. The typewriter created a new gender dimension in the clerk's office: female typists were actively recruited into government clerical work from the 1880s onward, and by the early 20th century most court typing and routine clerical work in larger offices was done by women -- often at lower wages than their male supervisors who carried the official title of Clerk of Court.

In the mid-1970s dedicated word processors (IBM's Mag Card typewriter, then Wang WPS) began appearing in larger court clerk's offices, enabling clerks to revise and reprint standard-form documents without retyping from scratch -- the first significant reduction in the repetitive-typing burden that had defined clerical work since the 1880s.

Intake counter staffing in courts with full e-filing was sharply reduced, but total clerk employment did not fall correspondingly because quality-control and exception-handling workloads expanded.
