    Early penny-press reporters gathered news on foot or horseback and transmitted copy by hand delivery to the composing room. The electric telegraph, commercially available by 1844, transformed correspondents into wire reporters — the Associated Press's founding in 1846 was built entirely around telegraph dispatch sharing.     Ottmar Mergenthaler's Linotype machine, installed at the New York Tribune in 1886, mechanized typesetting — a compositor could now set 6,000 characters per hour versus 1,500 by hand. Combined with steam-powered rotary presses, this technology enabled the mass-circulation daily newspaper. Reporters' output was now constrained not by press capacity but by reporting speed.     The mechanical typewriter standardized the reporter's copy production.
